An intelligent web tool that extracts vibrant color palettes from images and visualizes them in real-world UI contexts
A browser-based color extraction tool that helps designers quickly generate beautiful, usable color palettes from any image and see them applied to real UI mockups instantly.
Designers often struggle to create cohesive color palettes from scratch or extract usable colors from inspiration images. Existing tools either produce generic results or fail to show how colors work together in real UI contexts.
I needed to build a tool that not only extracts vibrant, usable colors but also demonstrates their practical application in different UI contexts.
I analyzed existing color tools and identified gaps in functionality and user experience.
I studied popular color extraction tools to understand their strengths and limitations:
Through conversations with fellow designers, I identified critical requirements:
Designers need: Smart color filtering, diversity in results, instant contextual visualization, and one-click color copying for seamless workflow integration.
I approached this project with a focus on algorithm quality and practical utility, ensuring the tool produces genuinely useful results.
Implemented a median cut algorithm for intelligent color quantization, filtering out near-whites, near-blacks, and low-saturation grays. The algorithm prioritizes vibrant, distinct colors that work well in UI design.
Created a clean, intuitive interface with drag-and-drop functionality, visual feedback during processing, and immediate color preview with hex codes. Designed for minimal friction between inspiration and implementation.
Built three distinct UI mockups (website, mobile app, dashboard) that automatically apply extracted colors to demonstrate hierarchy, contrast, and practical usage patterns. Each mockup uses colors intelligently based on their vibrancy and position in the palette.
Added one-click color copying, smooth transitions between mockup views, and visual feedback for all interactions. Focused on making the tool feel responsive and delightful to use.
The core of the tool is a sophisticated color extraction algorithm that goes beyond simple averaging:
Rather than using basic k-means clustering, I implemented a median cut algorithm that recursively divides the color space to find the most representative colors. This produces more diverse and visually interesting palettes.
The tool automatically filters out colors that are too light, too dark, or too desaturated. It calculates color vibrancy (saturation × brightness) to prioritize the most visually striking colors in the final palette.
Uses Euclidean distance in RGB color space to remove similar colors, ensuring the final palette has 6 distinct, usable colors rather than variations of the same hue.
The interface uses a vibrant gradient background to reinforce the tool's purpose while maintaining excellent readability with the white content card.
Large, inviting drag-and-drop area with clear visual affordances. Supports both click-to-upload and drag-and-drop for maximum flexibility.
Each color is presented as a large swatch with its hex code prominently displayed. Hover effects and cursor changes signal interactivity.
Three different mockup types show how colors work in various contexts: marketing websites, mobile apps, and data dashboards.
One-click copying to clipboard with toast notification feedback. No need to manually select and copy hex codes.
All processing happens client-side in the browser, ensuring instant results and complete privacy. Images are resized before processing to maintain fast performance even with large uploads.
The tool demonstrates advanced technical skills while solving a real designer pain point with an elegant solution.
The current version provides solid core functionality. Future iterations could expand capabilities while maintaining the tool's simplicity and speed:
